Ribbon Cutting at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center

April 4, 2008 was a historic day for Ohio State University Extension! The Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center was officially opened with a ribbon cutting led by President Gee. Nearly 500 friends, supporters, 4-H members, volunteers and staff attended the ceremony that officially opened the first green building on the campus of The Ohio State University.

Thanks to the more than 3,000 individuals, businesses, groups, clubs, and organizations that contributed to the “Building the Future” campaign. Led by the Nationwide Foundation and the Ohio Farm Bureau, all 88 counties participated in the campaign as well as individuals from across the country. Additional major donors include Bob Evans Farms, Inc., the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation, and the Farm Bureau Leadership Circle. Service as honorary chair of the steering committee was Marilyn Johnson Masters; her late husband, Ed, served as the first chair of the committee.

The 46,000-square-foot center is pursuing LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) administered by the United States Green Building Council. Its features include a geothermal heating and cooling system; plumbing fixtures designed to use 52 percent less water than conventional fixtures; extensive use of natural lighting and recycled materials; and highly reflective roof materials.

Plan to attend 4-H camp.
