Talented young cooks from across the state gathered at the Ohio State Fair on August 2 to compete in the 2026 Ohio 4-H Food Challenge, a fast-paced contest that tested participants’ culinary knowledge, creativity, teamwork, and communication skills.
Teams of two to four members were challenged to create a nutritious dish using a mystery ingredient and a selection of foods commonly found in a food pantry. This year’s secret ingredient was Swiss cheese, which each team was required to incorporate into its recipe.
After receiving their challenge materials, teams had just 40 minutes to plan, prepare, and present their dishes. Participants worked together to develop recipes, practice safe food handling techniques, and create meals that were both nutritious and appealing.
The use of food pantry ingredients added an important real-world element to the competition. Youth were encouraged to think creatively about how everyday pantry items can be transformed into healthy meals, demonstrating that nutritious cooking can be both affordable and accessible.
Judges evaluated teams on a variety of criteria, including teamwork, food safety, food preparation techniques, creativity, nutrition knowledge, and presentation skills. In addition to preparing their dishes, participants explained their recipe choices and described how their meals met nutritional goals while making effective use of the available ingredients.
The event began with registration and orientation before teams received their mystery ingredients and reviewed the food pantry items available for use. Once the challenge started, participants quickly put their planning and problem-solving skills to work, creating dishes that highlighted Swiss cheese while showcasing their culinary talents.
While the competition focused on food preparation, the skills developed through the Ohio 4-H Food Challenge extended far beyond the kitchen. Participants gained experience in meal planning, communication, leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking while building confidence in their ability to prepare healthy meals.
The Ohio 4-H Food Challenge continues to grow in popularity as more counties form teams and encourage youth to explore food and nutrition education. The event provides participants with opportunities to discover new foods, develop practical life skills, and build friendships with fellow 4-H members from across the state.
Top-performing teams earned the opportunity to represent Ohio at the National 4-H Food Challenge Contest, scheduled for September 29 in Dallas, Texas.
The success of the event was made possible through the dedication of volunteers, coaches, judges, families, and supporters who helped create a positive learning environment for participants. Their efforts contributed to an engaging experience that highlighted the best of Ohio 4-H and showcased the remarkable talents of Ohio’s youth.
