We are seeking enthusiastic 4-H members and 19 to 20 year old 4-H alumni to serve as camp counselors for the 2023 Junior and Senior Shooting Sports Camps!

The 2023 Junior Camp will be held June 23-25 at Canter's Cave 4-H Camp with counselors arriving at camp on the evening of June 22, 2023.

The 2023 Senior Camp will be held July 9-14 at Canter's Cave 4-H Camp with counselors arriving at camp on the evening of July 8, 2023.

Teen counselors must be at least 14 years old as of January 1, 2023 to counsel at Junior Shooting Sports Camp, and 15 years old by January 1, 2023 to counsel at Sr. Shooting Sports Camp. 4-H teens  and young alumni wishing to be a camp counselors must completed the Shooting Sports Camp Counselor application. Teens ages 18 and younger must attend 24 hours of counselor training in their home counselor program. Shooting Sports Junior Leaders are encouraged to apply, but teens do not have to be a Junior Leader to be a counselor at these camps.

Teens who take part in their local county counselor trainings in their home county are preferred and need to complete this application in addition to any county counselor applications to be selected as a counselor for these camps.

Alumni (19-20 year olds) are encouraged to apply to be camp counselors for Senior Shooting Sports Camp and maybe accepted at Junior camp as well, depending on volunteer spaces available. Alumni counselors will need to complete this counselor application, attend two online zoom trainings and have a BCI background check conducted and on file with their local county Extension Office. Approved, screened 4-H volunteers are preferred.

All teen counselors will be required to complete the counselor training requirements as outlined in the Ohio 4-H counselor position description. Training should be completed through your home county 4-H program. Please contact your local 4-H professional to discuss training requirements. County 4-H professionals will be asked to sign off on successful completion of counselor hours.

What will I do as a Shooting Sports Camp Counselor?

Counselors serve in a leadership role, supervising campers, providing cabin management, planning and participating in all camp activities, leading songs, games, educational programs and more. At Shooting Sports Camp, campers participate in discipline-specific sessions with adult instructors. Counselors will have the chance to select a shooting sports discipline and will work with the adult instructors in that discipline. Counselor selections will be finalized after all training requirements are completed and upon the recommendation of your local 4-H Educator.

We hope you will consider applying to be a camp counselor for the Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports Camps. These camps provide counselors with a great learning experience plus they are lots of fun!

Counselors attend camp for FREE thanks in part to a grant from the Division of Wildlife.

If you are a current 4-H’er or Alumni interested in serving as a camp counselor at an Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports Camp, please fill out the online application linked above.
