For many young people, discovering a future career path begins with trying something new. That is exactly what Ohio 4-H Spark EXPO is designed to do.
Spark EXPO is a part of Ohio 4-H’s premier college and career readiness program, bringing youth together for four days and three nights of hands-on learning, career exploration, and personal growth. Hosted through a collaboration between Ohio 4-H and the Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), the program gives participants entering ninth or tenth grade opportunities to explore careers, build skills, and connect with peers from across the state.
Each year, Spark participants attend sessions focused on careers in agriculture, science, technology, natural resources, business, and more. The program also offers opportunities to experience college life and learn directly from professionals in their fields. Spark introduces students to the wide range of opportunities within CFAES. For some, it builds on existing interests, while for others it opens doors to entirely new possibilities. There is something for everyone to learn and explore.
For one longtime participant, Spark has become much more than a summer event. Campbell Reese first attended Spark as a “Sparkler” during the program’s inaugural year. She returned each year, building friendships, developing leadership skills, and becoming more involved in the program. She later transitioned into the role of Junior Resident Assistant (Junior RA), mentoring younger participants. This summer marks her fifth year with Spark, reflecting both her commitment and the program’s impact on her growth in 4-H and youth development.
Campbell shared, “Spark is a place where students can explore new interests, meet people from different backgrounds, and step outside of their comfort zones.”
However, participants often find that the most valuable lessons extend beyond career exploration.
When asked about her role as a Junior RA, Campbell said, “One of the most rewarding parts of being a Junior RA has been watching students discover new interests, gain confidence, and find something that truly excites them. It is incredible to see how much growth can happen in just a few days.” 
At the end of the four days, the goal is for students to leave having found a spark—whether that is a future career path, a new interest, or a meaningful experience. Campbell reflected on what “finding your spark” means to her: “It could be something you want to pursue as a future career, a hobby you enjoy, or even a meaningful conversation that changes your perspective. Finding your spark does not have to be something huge or life changing. It looks different for everyone, and that is what makes Spark so special.”
Her advice for future participants is simple: “Be willing to try new things. It is completely okay to discover something you do not like—that is part of the experience. Spark is about exploring opportunities and learning more about yourself.”
Campbell will be attending The Ohio State University this fall, majoring in agribusiness and applied economics.
As Spark EXPO continues to introduce Ohio youth to new careers, experiences, and connections, stories like hers highlight the lasting impact of the program. For some participants, the spark they discover may shape future education and career goals. For others, it may simply open the door to new interests and greater confidence. Either way, the journey begins with a willingness to explore.
