Ohio 4-H STEM Camp is a residential, overnight summer camping experience designed for youth in grades 5–7. While campers enjoy many traditional camp activities such as archery, hiking, fishing, crafts, and outdoor recreation, what sets STEM Camp apart is the intentional integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into the camp experience. Through hands-on activities, interactive challenges, and real-world applications, campers discover how STEM concepts connect to everyday life and future career opportunities.
A key focus of STEM Camp is career exploration. Rather than simply introducing campers to STEM topics, the program helps youth think critically about their futures and the many pathways available within STEM fields. Campers gain exposure to a wide range of professions and learn that careers are often much more diverse than they initially realize. By exploring topics such as veterinary science, human medicine, engineering, physics, atmospheric sciences, coding and robotics, environmental science, and other emerging fields, participants begin to shift their thinking from simply choosing a job title to considering the problems they hope to solve and the impact they want to make in the world.
The educational sessions offered at STEM Camp are led by Extension educators, university partners, researchers, and industry professionals who provide campers with authentic learning experiences and insight into STEM careers. Each year, camp programming evolves to introduce new topics and opportunities for exploration. For example, this year's campers worked alongside the team from the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center as they piloted a new 4-H weather curriculum, giving youth a firsthand look at weather and climate science through engaging, hands-on activities. 
As one of the National 4-H mission mandates, STEM education is a vital component of Ohio 4-H programming. STEM Camp combines the positive youth development outcomes of the traditional 4-H camping experience with meaningful STEM exploration. Campers strengthen essential life and workforce skills, including teamwork, communication, leadership, problem-solving, and independence, while building friendships and creating lasting memories. These experiences help prepare young people for future educational and career success regardless of the path they ultimately choose.
The camp's impact is particularly meaningful in southeastern Ohio and throughout the Appalachian region, where access to STEM enrichment opportunities may be more limited. Many campers attend with the assistance of scholarships and are introduced to STEM concepts, careers, and technologies they may have never encountered before. For some participants, STEM Camp serves as a first opportunity to engage with professionals working in STEM fields, opening doors to new interests, aspirations, and possibilities for the future.
Making these opportunities accessible would not be possible without the support of the Ohio 4-H Foundation. Annual grant funding from the Foundation helps keep the cost of STEM Camp affordable for families across Ohio. While many comparable STEM camps cost between $500 and $700 per participant, Ohio 4-H STEM Camp is offered at just $125 per camper. This support helps offset the cost of specialized supplies, equipment, educational materials, and programming necessary to deliver a high-quality STEM experience. The investment ensures that more youth can participate regardless of financial circumstances and helps sustain a program that continues to inspire curiosity, expand horizons, and prepare the next generation of STEM leaders.
